As days lengthen
While sunshine smiles on all abroad
its lavish mood made clear,
I haul the drapes in stout defence
‘gainst day and all its fears.
Nature sings of bounteous times.
The plenty still to come.
Shuffled red bills lie loud indoors.
On table only crumbs.
See bursting blooms of vibrancy
in red, yellow and blue.
My flattened soul resides alone
in shades of darker hue.
Where once I grinned at start of spring,
now light blackens my mood.
A winter cry is all I have.
With ice I am imbued.
